Mold Illness and CIRS Evaluation in Oshkosh, Wisconsin
If you have lived in Wisconsin long enough, you have known a wet basement, a slow roof leak, or a musty rental. Some people who spend months or years in water-damaged buildings begin to feel unwell in ways that are hard to pin down, and by the time they find us, many have been told it is nothing, or that it is stress, or that it is all in their head. At Green Medicine of Wisconsin in Oshkosh, we take these stories seriously. This page explains what a mold illness and CIRS evaluation involves here and how to get started.
What CIRS means
Some clinicians use the term chronic inflammatory response syndrome, or CIRS, to describe a pattern of symptoms they associate with exposure to water-damaged buildings. CIRS is an evolving area of clinical study, and the term is still being defined across the wider medical community. What we focus on is your experience: feeling unwell in a moldy environment is real, and it deserves a careful, unrushed evaluation.
One tool among several
Mold is usually one part of a larger picture, so we evaluate it within a full, whole-person assessment. Green Medicine of Wisconsin is an integrative and functional medicine practice with a range of tools, listed on Our Services, and a mold and environmental history is one part of a full evaluation. Many people with tick-borne illness also have concerns related to mold exposure, and the two can overlap, which is one reason our Lyme and tick-borne illness care and our mold evaluation so often sit side by side.
Why patients come to us
These are the reasons people most often tell us they are reaching out. They are not a list of things any plan is promised to fix.
- Symptoms that began, or worsened, after moving into a new home, starting a new job, or living through a flood or leak.
- A household where one person feels sick and everyone else feels fine, which can leave the sick person doubting themselves.
- Reading about mold toxicity or CIRS online and wanting a licensed practitioner to talk it through with, rather than a forum.
- Being told everything looks normal while feeling far from normal.
How we approach it
- You become a patient through our intake, so your history is in front of your practitioner before your first visit.
- The environmental story gets real attention: where you live and work, what those buildings have been through, when your symptoms started, and what changes when you are away from the space.
- We use labs where they add real information, interpret each result in the context of your full history, and explain clearly what it means for your plan.
- We build a personalized plan with you, under the guidance of a practitioner, and we adjust it over time as your situation changes.
- Building assessment is specialized work for qualified inspectors and remediation professionals, and we help you think through the right questions to ask them.
Your providers
Mold and environmental evaluations are led by our nurse practitioners. Evey Andersen, MSN, APRN, FNP-C, is a Family Nurse Practitioner and a member of ILADS, and she spent ten years in neurosurgery and trauma at UW-Madison before building a whole-person practice. Jamie Lorrigan, DNP, APRN, holds a Doctorate of Nursing Practice and brings a listening-first approach to every visit. You can read more about them on Our Team.

Frequently asked questions
Is CIRS a real diagnosis?
CIRS is a clinical term still being defined across the wider medical community. What matters at your visit is your actual history, your actual symptoms, and a plan built for you.
Can a lab test tell me whether mold is making me sick?
Mold-related illness is evaluated from the whole picture rather than a single test. We use labs where they add real information and explain clearly what each result means for you.
Do you test homes for mold?
No. We are a medical clinic, not an inspection service, and we do not sell home test kits. If your building needs assessment, a qualified inspector is the right call, and we are glad to help you think through what to ask.
Do you do mold detox?
Our approach is a personalized plan built under the guidance of a practitioner, with clear goals we set together, rather than a one-size-fits-all detox product or protocol.
Should I move out of my house?
That is a major decision, and it deserves a real conversation with your whole situation on the table, which is exactly what we do at a visit. If your symptoms are severe or getting worse, please seek prompt medical care rather than waiting for an appointment.
Do you see patients outside Wisconsin?
Yes. We welcome patients from across the country and have cared for patients internationally. Your visits happen in person at our Oshkosh, Wisconsin clinic, since our providers are licensed in Wisconsin, and many patients travel in for care. Phone and video follow-ups are available where state licensure permits.
How much does it cost?
Costs are discussed at your visit and depend on your plan.
